Rang de Basanti- No justification nor denial-Just a review
The hype and electric drama that Aamir khan's films create can never match to even south India Mass heroes. And the beauty in Rand de basanti is he has not played any lead role in the movie. He is just a part of the cast crew that worked for this film.
As it is not a Hitchcock sort of movie, i think i can leak out the story line of the movie. It starts with SUE, an American director (i suppose so., though I do not know exactly those terminologies) who is by fortune the jailer's grand-daughter who witnessed four freedom fighters life in the prison to their hanging. She goes through his grandfather's diary and gets an aspiring idea to direct a documentary on that. But the company rejects the proposal with the golden word BUDGET. She quits her company and head to India. There were claps and whistles when she answers her boss' question “How will you shoot?" with " Tere Maa ki Aakh se". (Good punch dialogue.)
She meets her friend and she introduces Sue to her friends who do their studies in International School of studies. What a hostel room they provide there yaar? Then comes her audition where she couldn't even selected one. Then she decides to make the aamir khan, Siddharth & co (Sorry, i don't know their exact names) to act in her film. Then joins Atul kulkarni who is a worker in a national party.(They could've named it as BJP. How many coincidences? Modi,Saffron color.)With many differences of opinion of true patriotism, they start acting. Then joins the party, Madhavan who is a famed air-force pilot. She married Sue's friend and when Sue’s shooting is about to end, a disaster happens and the story actually starts from here. Like the freedom fighters who fought for mother India’s freedom, A GENERATION AWAKENS and the rest of the film is how they wake up and how they do their natur(e)al calls (from their heart).
There has been N number of patriotic stories in Indian cinemas (Where n-> infinity) and there has been N number of Gen-X films ( Where N -> > 50), but has there been a film that correlates these two. If at all there were some movies, their coefficient would have been very weak. Take for example the recent Mani ratnam's movie-Ayutha ezhuthu(or)Yuva. One dimension shows the Gen-X guy Siddharth. Here in RDB,the full dimension is towards that generation and how they react to the injustice caused by the power that cannot be fought with so easily.
The film actually has all aspects that will pull criticism and condemnation. (A caricature clone of Jaswant singh is the defense minister and he has done some scam in defense deals with Russia and there is another man who can be easily claimed to be Modi's nehew whose party worker shouts at a Muslim, "Pakistani").But that is not the real reason that makes the screenplay powerful. The real reason is the passion when it comes to each of the character and the way it is portrayed. Even when portraying "Do nothing! Enjoy" group, the passion remains the same and Mr.Rehman has given awesome support to the director.
Aamir khan is by no doubt a simile for Mr.kamal hassan(Note here, I’m not wedging any superiority theory here). Be it growing hair and moustache for almost 15 months or be it the way he speaks punjabi, he is occupying the 70 mm with full presence. Siddharth's role as a Gen-X guy shouldn't be new to him as his personality has been sculptured for the same , but the role of Bhagat singh, even with the screwed mouthstache, well., Was bhagat singh so childish? Madhavan has done his best for the cameo role he has been provided. Atul kulkarni remembers me the "Enn uyir tholan" lead role.Om puri, Anupham kher,The foreigner,Aamir's other friends have all fit themselves easily into their roles.
The crew behind the screens has also provided their best. Be it the editor who has made the transitions easy from real life time to the freedom struggle period or be it the camera man on shots which revolves around the cave where the freedom fighters assemble or be it the art director for the train robbery in the freedom struggle period and the light settings inside the jail, everyone has just added their true work though it is not visible to naked eye. Of course, it is always the managers who win the accolades when it comes to a project success.
A.R.rehman has again proved his reasons for acceptance towards specific films are legitimate (except for his acceptance for Ah..Aah). How many of you has listened to a BGM of hard rock guitars when the freedom fighters, patriots are hanged.Pure passion of music throughout the film. The song in the Golden temple, amristar makes you to search for punjabi real folk songs and download them.
Coming to the real story line, i can hear skeptic remarks like "How can they openly say that laying hands on the arms (weapons) is the only way to fight against corruption and other evils?”. At this point of time all we need in media (be it of any size) is openness. Forget the justification or the denial of the facts told in a movie."A writer's duty is to only state the problem, it’s causes and it's after-effects. He has nothing to do with the problem's solution" says Jeyakanthan, the gnanpith winner. Almost in all movies when hero or a lead character take up arms to fight the society evils, the film will portray another character which states “What are Law and Police for ?" This is missing in RDB and that boldness makes the film a real tribute to the bunch of freedom fighters, the film drools upon.
Anyway, never got a chance to mention this tag line of the film. So, I finish this review with that. "No nation is perfect. It is up to it's residents to make it. Don't say you can’t. Become an IAS,IPS or a politician to fight against the society evils."
